PRP Injection Therapy

What is PRP Therapy?

Plasma is a critical component of your blood that contains special proteins that help the blood to clot—forming gel-like clumps of blood that prevent excess bleeding in the event of an injury or cut. Plasma proteins are also known to directly support cell growth, by promoting cellular healing.

The acronym PRP in “PRP therapy” stands for what’s called “platelet-rich plasma,” a concentrated solution of platelets—cell fragments that contain plasma. By drawing blood from a patient and placing it in a centrifuge (a machine that separates fluids at different densities), doctors are able to separate platelets from other components of the blood, to create a concentrated solution of platelet-rich plasma, or PRP.

PRP Therapy is a quick and painless procedure that involves injecting PRP from your own blood back into a targeted area to promote healing on the cellular level. This has been shown to speed up the production of tissue-generating growth factors (such as the production of bio-proteins and hormones) to accelerate the healing process at the injection site.

Conditions Treated

PRP Therapy is an effective and minimally-invasive treatment option that can be used to a help heal a vast variety of conditions.

Injured Ligaments, Muscles & Joints

Torn Rotator Cuffs
Chronic Back Pain
Osteoarthritis
Post-Surgical Pain

Our Process

1

After an initial screening, we’ll schedule a time for your PRP therapy procedure. To start, we’ll draw a small amount of blood from your arm, the amount depending on where the PRP will be injected.

2

We’ll then place your blood sample in a centrifuge to create a concentration of platelet from your blood. This typically lasts 20 minutes.

3

Next, we’ll numb the affected area and, using imaging tests to pinpoint specific areas, inject the PRP into the area with a standard shot.

4

Following a brief period of resting, you can go home. You should be able to feel the full effects of treatment after a few weeks, and we’ll follow up periodically to ensure you’re in good health.

Recovery Procedures for PRP Therapy

Following a PRP injection procedure, you can expect to be able to resume your daily activities without much difficulty. However, it’s often encouraged that you rest for a few days following treatment.

You may notice an immediate difference in just a few hours following the PRP procedure, or it may take several weeks or months for you to feel the effects.

Keep in mind: because PRP involves injecting a substance into the skin, there are potential side effects, such as infection, pain at the injection site, or nerve or tissue damage. You can discuss these risks with your doctor prior to treatment to take steps to minimize these risks.
