Pinched Nerve in the Neck — Dallas Radiculopathy Specialists

A cervical pinched nerve can cause pain, tingling, or weakness from the neck down the arm. Our board-certified doctors confirm the cause with selective nerve-root blocks and deliver precise treatment—medications, therapy, or minimally invasive surgery when needed. Same- or next-day appointments at seven DFW locations.

Overview

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when a herniated disc, bone spur, or spinal stenosis compresses a nerve root. This irritation produces pain, numbness, or weakness in the shoulder, arm, or hand. Early treatment prevents long-term nerve injury and restores function.

Hallmark Signs

  • C5: Weak deltoid or shoulder pain
  • C6: Thumb numbness or biceps pain
  • C7: Triceps weakness or pain into middle finger
  • C8: Tingling/numbness into the pinky

Treatment Roadmap

1

Medications & Physical Therapy

anti-inflammatories and posture/strength training

2

Fluoroscopy-Guided Injections

selective nerve-root block or cervical epidural

3

Minimally Invasive Surgery

outpatient endoscopic foraminotomy if persistent compression

4

Disc Replacement (ADR) or Fusion (ACDF)

for instability or severe stenosis

Frequently asked questions

What are the first signs of a pinched nerve in the neck?

Early signs include sharp pain from the neck into the arm, tingling in the hand, or weakness in a specific muscle group (C5–C8 pattern). Prompt evaluation by a spine specialist ensures the correct diagnosis. Learn more on our Neck Pain page.

Can cervical radiculopathy heal without surgery?

Yes. Many cases improve with medications, physical therapy, and selective injections that reduce nerve inflammation. Recovery can take weeks to months. Surgery is reserved for persistent weakness, pain, or large herniations. See Physical Therapy & Rehab.

How long does relief from a nerve-root block last?

Relief typically lasts from several weeks to six months. In addition to easing pain, a nerve-root block confirms whether the compressed nerve is the true pain source—helping guide surgical decisions. See Epidural Injections.

Disc replacement vs. fusion — which is better?

Artificial disc replacement (ADR) preserves natural neck motion and reduces the risk of adjacent-segment disease, making it ideal for many single-level cases. Fusion (ACDF) is preferred when instability or multi-level disease exists. See Artificial Disc Replacement.

When should I see a doctor for arm numbness or weakness?

If weakness develops in your arm or hand, see a spine physician immediately. Delayed treatment risks permanent nerve damage. Our specialists provide same- or next-day care at seven DFW locations. Learn more at our Head & Neck Hub

How quickly can I be evaluated and treated?

Most patients are seen the same or next day. During your visit, we review your history, examine you, and, if indicated, perform a fluoroscopy-guided injection for both diagnosis and relief. See Contact Us.
